My Beauty by Wang Yiqun

Wang Yiqun’s newest book My Beauty was released last night. In this female portrait series, every model poses easefully toward the camera with her face covered by long black hair. It might easy for us to associate the work by the Chinese artist with the derivation unknown tale, … inquired the way of a long haired girl in a dark woods and she turned to you with her face looked the same as the back of the head, or with the famous Buddhist proverb, turn back and the shore is close at hand. While Wang would like to leave his statement absent, the book has included extracted reviews by three curators and critics, who give of their perspectives of the work.

Wang, a New York based artist produced the project between the summer of 2007 and the spring of 2008 in U.S.. The selected pieces from the body of work have been exhibited in New York City and Shanghai, China. This is the second book Wang self-published in association with ONEs.

"Throughout the book we’re taken in a trance-like state around a dream filled New York City. When we arrive everything is silent, people move around us without making a noise. No one looks us in the eye, no one even notices we’re there. Strange things are happening, dozens of people cross the street dressed as angels and no one bats an eyelid. After wandering through the secret areas of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn we go down to the subway and embark on a silent journey out to the sea. With long shadows on the sandy beach, we wake up before sunset."

"Hyperlinks, GIFs, and integrated audio/visual content definitely have their own appeal, but I’ll take Stephen Shore’s A Road Trip Journal or Zheng Yaohua’s Sleepwalk any day of the week."
